I suppose I'll jump on the bandwagon.....

Okay, if you read Kakie's blog, you've been through this before. Coraline spoilers. Lots. Got it? Good.

Love that "tm" thing....

Okay, so I saw Coraline with Kakie, and here are my thoughts:

I feel that Coraline needed to learn to know that other people have problems other then her. In the beginning of the film, you saw her parents were a little depressing, but she was in no way trying to make the best of it. When Mom/Dad try to be nicer, like when Mom is about to go to the grocery store, Coraline was too moody to attempt to make the best of the situation. And she vented some of her feelings on Wybie. Then, when she meets the ghosts of the kids, and the other Wybie with his mouth sewed into a smile, she learned that other people have issues with the world. Learning that made her appreciate life and, as Kakie put it when I talked to her: "She learned to make beauty." She needed people to bring herself out. Her true personality, which really was quite pleasant, was lost in the depth of her depression. I found it odd that after the first time she visited the other world, (by following mice) she refused to believe the mice in the real world. I know, it would be strange if someone called out saying: "The mice say not to go through the door!" and you believed them, but instead of listening to the warning, she follows the other mice, into the other world. I think she wanted it to be true. It had to be true. The other world was a doll house, everyone was a rag doll, with personalities that the other Mother thought were perfect. It was Coraline's dream. She was loved, her every whim attended. Everyone was perfect. Except the other Wybie. He was flawed. He was... Almost human? He showed Coraline what the other Mother was really like. And instead of giving in and being a rag doll, he found a personality that was crucial to Coraline's basic waking up to life and to other people. I also saw weakness in the other Mother. If she was so powerful, why was she not brave enough to go and show Coraline the perfect world herself? I liked the movie very very much, and would enjoy to rewatch it, with a remote to skip the scene of flinching. ;)
Nice to be blogging again! -Calvin
